Trend Alert - Swing Jackets

A nother hot and chic trend blazing the streets these days is the swing jacket. Also called the trapeze jacket, its fits snugly at the shoulders and broadens as it makes its way to your waist. Because of the way it gets wider at the waist, you may feel the need to pair it with skinny jeans mostly, to try and reclaim some of your shape. But be daring and try this style with shorts and minis as well. It makes for great layering as some are short, hitting right above the waist. This gives you a great opportunity to mix the hot gray colour with some of the jewel tones now in, or to even mix and match different jewel tones.

Swing jackets add that element of fun detailing to your outfit. It spruces up a work outfit and adds that element of party chic to what could have been an otherwise drab office jacket. It plays up cute shorts or adds that extra fab to your skinny-jeans-and-stiletto-with-your-status-bag-in-hand game. I featured a swing jacket here in my work basics post, so locals can be sure of one place to get them. Otherwise, some great swing jackets were found on Style Bakery , some of which are shown below. Did he get it right?

Sep 28th, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: Male Style

My friend Darren is a fellow self-professed fashion guru. Always the trendsetter, he has gone as far as to dabble in altering designs to change it up a little, setting himself apart from the rest. I think he gets it right 90% of the times, he’s always fresh and always fly! I just love it when a man has his style game together. This here time tho…I’m not too sure. He’s quite proud of the fact that he’s pulled off his white tie look at his friend’s wedding, however I’m of the view that a white tie does not match with a cream pants! I’m gonna throw this one out to you guys to determine if i’m paranoid or if he did get it right indeed. I’m thinking it would’ve only worked if he had on a cream jacket to match? I dunno y’all… this one goes out to you. So tell me, did he get it right?

Don’t kill me Dee you know I love you!

Shimmer’s having a sale!

Sep 27th, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Shop Jamaica

70% off? Now that’s my kinda sale!!! AND it says even on new arrivals! Shimmer is one of those absolutely great stores I visit when I want to treat myself for being cute  They are a tad on the expensive side but they have an excellent selection of items that will make you stand out from the crowd. (just make sure they don’t have too many of the same item in stock) When stores have sales its normally the totally hideous stuff and you wonder to yourself what in the world they were thinking, but this seems like it is indeed the sale of the year. Yours truly will be on the scout tomorrow checking out the fine print of this here sale. Check back for pics tomorrow and if you happen to pop into the store make sure to tell them you heard about the sale here for an even deeper discount (I’m sure) ;-)

Up and Coming

Sep 27th, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Jamaican Designers

You know what I love about finding up and coming designers before them actually "buss" and "gone a road?" They’re cheap!!! And extremely flexible too. They’re open to suggestions alot of the times and will do lots for some publicity (like send on some swimsuits!). Good publicity anyway, even if its just to say, I’ll tell my friend about you, instant discount!

In this land of beaches and bikini bodies, swimsuits and sexy lingerie should be overflowing from our dresser drawers… And I have found the perfect way to have lots and lots of cute dezines to set us apart from the rest without spending a fortune. Her name is Nikki and she makes the cutest lingerie, costumes and swimsuits! She calls them Dashielle’s Dezines and I’m in love. She pays great attention to adding little, unique detailing and her craftsmanship is just great! She specializes in swimsuits that can be worn a variety of ways as well as different colour pipings and thongs with skirt coverings! One of my favorites is this white one with the patterned detailing.

And I have a few modifications for this butter yellow one to order…
picture-014.jpg
She is currently in design school and I can just see the quality that is to come! Take my advice and get in now while the prices are still way below market value. My most recent purchase is this blue swimsuit with turquoise belting that I sometimes mis-match with this turquoise top I had purchased before. Do you like?

Here I will leave you with some of her swimsuits but check back for an update on her sizzling costumes…do you think he can handle it? ;-)

Nikki’s number is (876)8829619 or (876)4554990. Tell her you heard about her on Fashion Over Style.

Female Work Basics

Sep 26th, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: Irie Diva's Picks, Style School

Lil munchkin Sarita has said she is totally clueless when it comes to fashion. In fact, her wardrobe compiles of blues, blacks and yeah…all that drab, sorry i meant basic, stuff. So lil munchkin has asked me to point her in the direction of work basics, to complement her basic wardrobe.

Well I don’t have everything to compile a complete work basics post (cus in my view extensive is basic :-D ) , but here are a few items from Ophelia’s to get you started. Ophelia’s is my favorite store to buy unique work pieces from. (unique doesn’t suggest basic eh) They aren’t exactly the cheapest, but you’re clothes will go a long way and you won’t look like everybody else at work. Definitely a plus in my book. They’re not break your bank expensive either or else I wouldn’t be shopping there, trust! They’re located in the New Kingston Shopping Centre (I’m on a roll today I know) So because this is supposed to be a basics post i stuck to solid colours and pieces that can be mixed and matched. The layered look is quite hot, the button ups have cute buttons, belts or are gathered…all of these pieces are somewhat different from the norm. No plain old basic here!

For the Hippies

Sep 26th, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: Plus Size Rules

No not hippies meaning bohemian, sixties inspired fashion but for the sistas out there with more hips than me. Firstly let me say hmph! Beg you some nuh!!! Anyway time for another style me please. You’ll love this one as it features a local boutique as well so you can actually pop in and pick up the items suggested.

Fashionite Yamfoot writes:

“so Irie Diva, you can suggest some nice styles that would fit my body type please?????

5 ft 8, hippy, 205 lbs.”

Well Yamfoot I’ve gushed about the wrap top before but now I’ll gush about the wrap dress because its PERFECT for hippies. The wrap dress will accentuate a your bosom area for one, with its deep v-neck styles, drawing away attention from your hips. Also a wrap dress is either A-line which flares oh so sexily from your hip area and gently sways as you walk or its straight but since its a wrap dress it conforms to your natural shape and will give the waist area great definition.

Well you know how I always talk about Fashion 911? Well guess who has some gorgeous wrap dresses! View the pics I took at the store today below, I fell in love with the blue and yellow one, and it wasn’t even bank breaking! See thats why I love this store. That rose pink top is calling out to me as well. Fashion 911 is located at 16 Windsor Avenue, off Old Hope Road, Kingston 6. Call Nichole at (876) 9278937 and tell her you saw it on FOS, she might give you a nice lil discount ;-)

They have some great wrap tops as well. Longer tops will cover hips nicely and the shorter ones flare off accentuating those hips, cus come on now with great hips you’re not gonna hide them 24/7! Make sure to wear them with pants that have a boot cut. Hippies do not want to be seen in pencil jeans or straight pants. The subtle flare of a boot cut will balance wider hips.

Oraine Barrett - Jamaican Fashion Model

Sep 6th, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Jamaican Models, Male Style

Well Pulse Entertainment holds its annual Caribbean Model Search live finals this Friday and I thought I’d let you in on former winner Oraine Barrett, what has the competition done for him?

Oraine Barrett grew up in rural St. Elizabeth, Jamaica loving football. That’s what his life was about mostly until he kind-of collided with modeling. I asked him how he ended up entering Model Search in the first place:

actually my brother’s girlfriend was the one interested but she was shy to go to pulse and give it a shot so my brother asked me to give it a shot so that his girlfriend can have someone to flex with. it eventually paid off. i was 19 at the time. when i entered the competition i was still in high school but i didn’t let many people know that i entered because i did not want anyone to give me negative reactions. i only told four persons at my school, my best friend, my gym partner, one of my coaches and my then girlfriend. i wasnt considering model because that wasnt my dream. football was the ultimate. I was offered a [football] scholarship [from a US college] but my papers went through too late so i couldn’t get to continue my education. that summer of 04 i was confused because i didnt know what i was going to do and modeling was the only other option which i didnt have any clue about. that was one of the most difficult periods in my life.

Style Me Please - Time to get grown

Sep 3rd, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: Male Style, Style School

Fashionite "Ganja Pilot" writes:

Tell me sum’n, I’m more into jeans and long sleeved shirts whenever I’m going out (clubbin’ or whatever)….trying the sophisticated look y’kno. I used to wear polo shirts exclusively but now I’ve branched off into wearing more t-shirts for just going on the road. So yeh…wat’s fashionable in the world of dress shirts? Plaid? stripes? solid colors?

Very good question! Its hard to shop for you men! Seemingly, male fashion evolves at a much slower pace than women. The variations are rarely humongous but the subtle differences make or break a design! I’ve been researching this question all day and found very few results when it comes to new trends in the male fashion world. So what I did instead was to just browse the various brands that I could remember and see what new designs they had to offer. I saw nothing "new" or nothing really "trendy" but what I found were a few classic designs that will always work for parties or chilling. The transition from tees to button downs is one I think most men, or at least most men that are style-aware, go through. At some point they grow up, leaving the all-occasion t-shirt game behind and stepping up to a classier, more mature look. Big man ting! I’m glad GP has made the step over, most t-shirts are definitely for errands and game nights.

Sep 3rd, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: Irie Diva's Picks

Well its election day! While everybody else is discussing issues and getting heated, I thought I’d lighten things up and add my stamp of style on the day by giving my fellow Jamaican ladies some fabulous choices to represent your party of choice, something casual for going out to vote and something fabulous for celebrating later! Their are two prominent political parties here in Jamaica are use the colours orange and green. So, here are some outfits I did up just now. Please leave your comments and tell me if i did well :) Most of the pieces are from either wetseal or forever21 , and of course some shoes from Fredericks and Victoria’s Secret .
