The Pulse Model Agency PR machine is in on full grind pumping out releases on all things Pulse as usual. This time around they publicize Jamaican model Nikki Vassell in last week’s issue of the Flair. You can read the entire article here, I liked the fact that she was doing other things with her time…you know…just in case she breaks a leg or grows a zit or something, excerpt:

“Nikki has not only created a stir in fashion circles but in fine arts as well. She enrolled in a liberal arts degree programme in Manhattan and after her first semester, had an amazing 4.0 grade point average. She began working in the art world after completing her degree and is currently, the director at Deitch Gallery located in SoHo, Manhattan.

“There is so much fluidity. You get to learn everything,” gushes Nikki about her job as Dietch Director. This spring, she organised her own exhibition project, titled, ‘Powers of 10: Successive Orders of Formal and Psychological Magnitude’. She also coordinated the gallery’s recent Francesco Clemente exhibition and accompanying catalogue, ‘Francesco Clemente Works 1971-1979′, which was on view May 3-June 2.”

Its Cocktail Time - Juliana Blue

Oct 14th, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: Its Cocktail Time

Juliana Blue

On this slow and lazy Sunday afternoon, I’m home doing laundry that I was unable to do because of the rains spoken about last week. I do so while catching up on the latest Brit news and all the other useless celeb gossip I may have missed and channel surf to find something worthwhile to watch which seems impossible on a Sunday. I do all my rounds of my favourite fashion blogs and realize I may be the only person who updates on a Sunday. My phone is ringing, all my friends want to go to the beach or what have you, but the beaches close by will be too packed and the ones further out are…well…too far out. I have work early in the morning, and it’s a holiday so I dare not miss the extra holiday pay!

So today I bring you another fab cocktail for your weekend pleasures. This one seems to have flown below the radar as not even my favourite bartender site has it in their listing. I can tell my bartender friend at Indies was trained well, he definitely has his cocktail game on lock! Anyhow, it’s called a Juliana Blue and it is absolutely gorgeous! It’s that nice baby blue colour that just sings tropical happiness, topped with pine and cherries to hit the theme home. It has a good amount of pine juice (which I hate) in it so that was the main flavour, but it was creamy as well to take away the zing of the pine. As pine is not my favourite fruit drink at all you know how good this drink was for me to be singing its praises! After a couple of these babies I was good and nice! ;)

Here are the ingredients. Do what I do, save them in your blackberry and share it with your favourite bartender if he’s not familiar because this is definitely one to add to the regulars. If he’s like my friend, then he’ll appreciate the repertoire update and may throw in a freebie ;)

Crushed ice
1 measure gin
½ measure Cointreau
½ measure blue Curaçao
2 measures pineapple juice
½ measure fresh lime juice
1 measure coconut cream
1-2 ice cubes

To decorate:-
Pineapple slice
Cocktail cherries

This is my drink Friday nite, mmmm yummy!

Fab Rain Wear

Oct 8th, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: Irie Diva's Picks, Shoes

Its been raining for a while in Jamaica now and this morning I woke up to extremely heavy showers. What’s a fabulous diva to wear?!? Rain should not stop our cuteness ladies. I saw an elderly lady in her rain boots out and about today and joked how I should have some of those. I was asked what I would do with them once I got to office. Well, there are some fabulous pieces you can put together to brighten up a drab, rainy day.

Jamaicans are not known for wearing boots and are often ridiculed for wearing boots in such a hot climate. But these boots, they NEED to be a part of our tropical climate wardrobe. I hear a common question being asked “what do I wear with my rain boots?” Rain boots are chunky and can take away from a fabulous outfit OR they can be the highlight!

Today I’ll put together some fabulous wears for the rainy day. First of course, a little lesson in the type of fabric thats best for you people with the funky feet :-x or those who aren’t on there way to work in an AC-ed office but in a warmer space. You’ll want to get a waterproof/breathable shoe, so that the water will stay out and the sweat can escape as well. These “are defined as fabrics that will withstand over 1000 millimetres of water pressure without leaking, whilst allowing water vapour to pass through. Their most common use is in outdoor sports clothing and single wall tents, because of their ability to allow sweat to evaporate while remaining impervious to rain. Fabric construction…directs water away from the body [and] can be used to keep the wearer dry, rather than membranes, coatings or laminates. This means that perspiration can be moved away from the body more effectively as both liquid water and water vapour can be directed.” Learn more from Wikipedia.

These boots ladies are from Gore Tex, a company that specializes in this waterproof/breathable shoes. Ara Portofino Boot — TallStuart Weitzman Elemental Bootwith descriptions like “Stuart Weitzman’s Elemental Boot will keep you looking good and feeling comfortable all [season] long.
It is made with a waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX® lining for breathable comfort and complete weather protection, even under the wettest conditions.
The side zipper makes on and off a breeze, while the rubber sole keeps you steady ” I am sold!!! Men they have you covered too: Urban Flexor Low GTX ShoeSlate Shoe

Of course I looked at shoes more for the office but you can check out the website for shoes for outdoor activities as well.

Now on to brighter colours! Now us Jamaicans, are not coat wearers neither…but come on! A rainy day is the perfect day to infuse a little nothern style into our wardrobes and get away with it. Park the glad wrap looking raincoat, wouldn’t you look absolutely stunning stepping into the office in this gorgeous trench coat? Step it up a notch by opting for red! raincoat.jpgredtrench.jpg

No wet worries for you with those babies on.

One of my many annoyances is having to wear pants in the rain because the feeling of the wet pant foot against my ankle…. eeeewwww! Back to my fabulous boots, any excuse to pop them on. Keep your feet warm in style with these Marc Jacobs boots, as you see they are in a variety of this season’s “it” colours to make your outfit pop and keep you nice and dry. Match them with your favorite coloured accessories over neutrals (pants, capris, skirts or dresses will look great with these boots!) and you’re good to go. Notice the heel is stacked so no worries for slipping in puddles, yet still fashionable. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Of course rain boots have gone through many transitions now and so you can find a fun one for any occasion. Thanks to I Am Fashion for some of these boots below.

Trend Alert - Jewel Tones

Oct 5th, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: Trend Watch

n13004126_31227305_2476.jpg

This is not a new trend (you should have caught on to this one by now) but its in honor of another one of my fabulous friends (birds of a feather of course)

Deep, rich colours are in! Purples, scarlet reds, mustard yellows, royal blues and emerald greens are very hot right now. Carla is gorgeous in this purple dress worn partying recently. My tips on wearing these hot fall colors: make sure you break it up with prints, layers or hot accessories as there is bound to be alot of the various shades should you chose to wear these colors to a “hip event” Pair it with something unique, not necessarily something trendy since the color itself is already very trendy and will be popular at a party.

It’s Cocktail time! Almond Hazel

Oct 3rd, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: Its Cocktail Time

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketIncorporating my love of all things stylish and all things alcoholic :-D I bring to you….. Cocktail Time! *yay! confetti falls from sky*

One of my absolutely favorite things to do is visit a fabulous bar where I can sit and lyme with friends and try new cocktails. With my new fabulous feature, I’ll invite you to step out of your “rum n coke” or “vodka/cran” box and try one of the favorites that I’ve encountered on my rounds. Of course, I am but one person and can only consume so much alcohol…as hard as I sometimes try…so I invite you to share your favorites with me so that I too can expand my palette to the wide array of mixes that await.

But first, as always, a definition. Wiki says a cocktail is: a style of mixed drink. A cocktail usually contains one or more types of liquor and flavorings, usually one or more of a liqueur, fruit, sauce, honey, milk or cream, spices, etc.

I was introduced to this cocktail by my good friend and drinking partner in crime Tami, at one of our visits to Indies Bar & Grill on Holborn Road, New Kingston. Bartender Ryan calls it an Almond Hazel, though I’ve been to other bars where it appeared on the menu as something else. When I went back, I made sure to get the ingredients down so that I can order it wherever I go as the bartender at my favorite hot spot was quite confused when I ordered it there:

  • Amaretto
  • Tia Maria
  • Creme

That’s it! Ryan used evaporated milk with mine and it was simply amazing! Every time I go there I start with that. Its not as creamy as a rum cream and not as harsh as a mixed drink. Try it, you’ll be glad you did!

Make sure to report back here if you like it! And share your favorites with me please! By the way if you are a bartender or love trying new mixes, then webtender is your friend!

Style swagger - watches

Oct 3rd, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: Male Style, Style School

gqwatch.jpg

Its time for a taste of the finer things in life. This post speaks to the males. Males on a mission, on that corporate ladder heading to big things. While some men do not pay great attention to fashion, regard should be placed on some pieces of your wardrobe that speak to your style, status and personality. A watch is one of those pieces. It shows good taste, professionalism, confidence and sex appeal (there’s nothing sexier on a man’s arm, ditch the skull bracelets and pinky rings). Yes a watch can do all those things. Its the reason its such a status symbol and one of those things you should invest in if the boardroom is where you’re heading.

Where else to turn when asking the question, "how do I select THE perfect watch?", than GQ?

GQ gives us the low down on purchasing the most important accessory in a male wardrobe by first telling us the 5 things we need to know.

Five watch terms that will make you sound like an industry pro

1. Complication
Any function of a watch that goes beyond simple timekeeping. Could be an annual or lunar calendar, could be something as basic as a stopwatch.

2. Movement
All those bits and pieces inside that run the thing.

3. Quartz
A movement powered by a battery and regulated by the oscillations of a quartz crystal. It’s way more accurate than other watch types-which isn’t to say we necessarily recommend you buy one.

4. Self-winding
A type of mechanical watch, containing a rotor on a pivot, that’s wound by the day-to-day movements of the wearer’s wrist. It’s also referred to as automatic.

5. Water-resistant
Just because a watch says it’s water-resistant doesn’t mean you should swim or shower with it on. To be safe, only do so if it’s water-resistant up to one hundred meters.

This is a Tag Heuer watch that I love, described by GQ as an everyday, wear to work type watch. It retails for $1995.

Star Girls

Oct 1st, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Street Style

Winston Sill is at it again. So I like these girls that he always puts in the Jamaica Star…I can see this becoming a regular feature, always providing entertainment on a dull day. :-D

Jamaica Star Photos by Winston Sill

So here’s the pickings for this week. Lets Vote… no lets talk about home girls damn ripped jeans? WTH???? ok lets vote…

D is total hotness, I’m a little biased because I know homegirl, but come on, no competition here. Closest is C but I am deeply opposed to the hair, the accessories and that metal spider thing in the middle of her dress that is so common on tops and dresses these days.

B….Lets just move on

A :-| When will we begin to put in weave that looks more believable…when? *sigh* The shorts are another matter but I’m really opposed to her hair.

Am I wrong here ppl?

I’ll leave you with last week’s winner. Now maybe I’m jus hating on homegirl’s ability to rock such a skimpy dress with such ease (yes I’m totally hating) but these jewels here look like they were taken from a cracker-jack box. I’ll qoute one guy “i almost like it, minus those jewels on her neck, who told her hoochi and queen elizabeth go together?” HA love it!

The matching hair and “bride of chucky” make up is not working for me either but I’m not gonna hate on homegirl’s bod, she is wearing the heck out of this dress! Loves it! (and it’s so trendy in the hot jewel tone colour that is all the craze right now) You go ma…
