Getting prepped for the Red Carpet - Reggae Academy Awards

Feb 26th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Fashionable Events

Cherine, Marcia Griffiths, Queen Ifrica

Cherine Anderson had the prestigious honour of opening the very first Reggae Academy Awards held in Kingston, Jamaica on February 24th. She was also a nominee that night and we spoke to her about this honour and her preps for the big show. We know by now that Cherine loves the big brands and brings all out glamour when preparing for an appearance and at the Reggae Awards she stayed true to her fabulous form.

On choosing wardrobe and getting prepped:

I believe an award show is a special opportunity to go and celebrate those in the industry who have performed well throughout the year, but its also an excuse to put your stiletto-heels forward and dress up. I think red carpet is about finding that dress that makes a statement on an evening when everyone is out looking their best and in a mood to celebrate. I wanted to find something that was hot , something that said Cherine Anderson, I also wanted something comfortable enough to walk around in, but still had a WOW factor.

Initially we had three looks in mind, an ivory satin Christian Dior dress ( for the red carpet), a white cotton Versace jumpsuit ( for the performance) and a green silk jersey Versace dress that I would present in.

Lunch Fashion Bits - Cherine, Nell and Queen Ifrica

Feb 25th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Featured Articles, Jamaican Celebrities, Jamaican Models

If you have a copy of March’s Cosmopolitan issue, you’ll see Jamaican supermodel Nell Robinson in a fashion story gracing not one, not two but all of seven pages in the magazine. Pulse’s star model shows off denim trends in the issue and comes away from her usual sexy image. You can read more about this accomplishment or simply pick up a copy of Cosmo.

Last night was the first Annual Reggae Academy Awards held at the National Indoor Sports Centre and our reggae stars came out in full high fashion. Stay tuned for pics of the fashion, our fave songstress fashionista here at FOS, Miss Cherine Anderson, was dazzling in her usual high-fashion designer gear.

Speaking of hot, Queen Ifrica is a sight to behold in this dazzling red number with yellow and green flower detailing to complete her rasta colours. Truly gorgeous!

Update: Thanks to my FOS readers who tells me Queen Ifrica’s dress was made by Imani of the House of Tafari. Thanks guys, y’all have my back! And great work Imani!

Bitten by the Accessory Bug

Feb 20th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Bags, Featured Articles

Remember how I was saying I’m really not a bag person, but I was waaaay open to being converted? Ashley from Accessory Bug heard my cry! She said she thought FOS readers would like what they have to offer and I must say I agree. Its a cute clutch isn’t it? Yup, I like that clutch. Their bags are cute and they aren’t bank breakers…they make me wanna order a few and pay the $20 international shipping fee, especially since they’re having a 10% sale untill the end of March! (enter the coupon code: wintersale at checkout) I’d pick up a few like these below, they’d go well with the new summer colours. Are you feeling the bite of the Accessory Bug?

Bright, Bold Prints for the Summer!

Nicole Miller Cross Back DressThe seasons have changed in the lands that have such seasons…and so have the trends evolved. Fashion weeks have played out in the fashion capitals and designers have shown us hungry fashion addicts what we’ll be going ga-ga for this year. Unwearable couture designs have been filtered down to red carpet gowns and have now made it to the boutiques in more ready-to-wear ensembles.

Not all of the over-the-top styles that designers like to send sauntering down the runways make it on the backs of the fashionable, like me and you. However one of them that has made it and is Just Cavalli Faux Wrap Dressmaking a very bold statement is that of bright and busy prints. Browse through the “what’s new” of upscale department stores like Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom and you’ll find them filling the pages. I am just in heaven! I think they’re gorgeous, bold and definitely statement-making. Fashionistas…be the first to step out in this hot trend as it is sure to take over the streets of Jamaica. Are you feeling this trend? Can you see yourself rocking it?

Grammy Fashion Flop

Feb 11th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Fashionable Events, Featured Articles, Trend Watch

If you’ve been keeping up with Hollywood then you know there’s a writer’s strike and lots of red carpet cancellations. Hence, runway to red carpet occurrences have been minimal and we, the fashion editors, who normally watch the red carpet to see what trends have made it from the fashion week runways to the red carpet have not had many opportunity to do so this season. The Grammy’s therefore, I was sure would have been major fashion fanfare as with so few opportunities to get the glitz on, I thought for sure every celeb would have been on point with the fashion game last night. But they’re celebs…what was I thinking?!?! There were certainly more misses than there were hits last night and a few just ok. My favorite picks of the night were definitely a very smooth NEYO and a very pretty Carrie Underwood, wearing Ferragamo and Zuhair Murad respectively. Jay Z, Snoop and Luda were all very smooth with the suit game and Rihanna was in cobalt blue that really wasn’t very easy to pull off. She’s cut her hair again…soon she’ll be bald? But she keeps changing it up, gotta love her. Beyonce was a mess in a powder blue, sparkly princess gown and shorter but still wacky weave and Alicia Key’s dress was gorgeous…but her hair…hideous! Keyshia Cole was cute and girly, not sure if I’m feeling the black ‘do though.

I must mention that the dress Carrie is wearing is very fashion forward in its unusual floral print. Keep posted for more of this trend stepping straight of the fashion week runways currently buzzing in the fashion capitals.

Has he been naughty? Dashielle’s Vday gifts will certainly make him nice!

Feb 10th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Featured Articles, Holiday Style, Jamaican Designers

Dashielle’s Dezines, a new swimsuit designer that I wrote about sometime ago has been up to some cute things! I visited her recently and picked out a few pieces that would make a man go gggrrrrr and drool all over you this Valentine’s Day. Don a whip and some boots and kick up the intrigue behind closed doors this Valentine’s Day with this hot black leather-looking number or go traditional in red. What about this blue number though, are you feeling it? I am really digging the island design in strategic places on the piece. Remember you can call 876-882-9619 or 876-455-4990 to order these or any one of Dashielle’s original designs.

Its Bob Marley Day!!!

Feb 5th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Jamaican Celebrities

Don a Bob tee today! (February 6th) Celebrate the life of the most famed Jamaican reggae artist, who is mostly responsible for putting Jamaica and our reggae music on the map and made everyone fall in love with us in the first place. Bob Marley would have been 63 years old today had he not succumbed to cancer in 1981. He is still the most successful, most respected and most well known Rastafari ambassador and reggae artist to date. Jamaica is synonymous to some with Bob Marley and well…herbal remedies…

Bob has a song for almost every topic in the book, you can find at least one in his arsenal to perk you up and put you in a great mood…so be like me and don a Bob tee! Or at least wear some Red, Green and Gold, the Rastafarian colours, if there’s no Bob in your closet (which is such a crime!)

Happy Bob Day from Irie Diva and the Fashion Over Style.net team.

One love!

What do you honestly think about Barbee?

Feb 4th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Jamaican Celebrities

Ok, FOS is definitely not a gossip site so you’ll find no juice here on the girl. What I want to know is what you think about the look of this, one of our newest female sensations coming out of the dancehall. She is most popularly known as the girl that was rumoured to be the cause of the split between Beenie Man and wife of less than a year, D’Angel. According to local tabloid Xxtra, she is a “a full-figured statuesque model” who got the name “Barbee” because she ”was very fashionable and liked to dress up in high heels, little skirts and wear big curly hair when she was only 10.” Apparently, she is quite the tall one, hence the “statuesque” and the derriere is out of this world! With all that junk in the trunk, she keeps it tight and I can’t hate on her body, she’s looking good…to me anyway, people keep referring to her as “baby giant” :( then again I’ve never seen her in person. What I can’t stand is the hair! I guess she didn’t leave the big curly hair behind when she went through puberty. To match the heavy blonde weaves she keeps in rotation, homegirl is never without a heavy layer of bubble gum pinks on her face and is more than likely what landed her on Chester Francis-Jackson’s (for the Jamaica Gleaner) 2007 “Who’s Not” list, and I quote “Girl, no amount of weaves or hair dye will change your race!” Ouch! But I must agree. I wasn’t a fan of Beyonce’s weaves and same goes for Miss Barbee and the worl’ a hair! Get it together girlie….

Anyway any press is good press so here’s some publicity Miss Barbee…hit me up so we can talk about your style!

FOS loyals…What do you think?

Is Barbee a fashion hottie?
