What I Wore: On Casual Friday

Jul 28th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Street Style

Cutie pie Sheena upped the casual Friday jeans-and-button-up ante by donning this cute little dress she designed herself and had made. The white cardi makes it work appropriate (if you work in a more relaxed environment) and the black and white striped heels are very cute as well…matching her bug-eyed shades.

Sheena is a budding fashionista who may just have her own line someday…you’re well on your way with your signature style…keep it up!

Now we know what to wear under that next time right? :)

Fashion from Reggae Sumfest 2008…the WTF files

Jul 22nd, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Fashionable Events, Featured Articles

Actually…its really not a full post on who wore what…I really just wanted to ask Ms. Keyshia one question…what the hell is this???

These balls have been freaking me out for the longest while and everyone else who saw them.

"So Irie Diva, are balls in?"

Well…certainly not those! Its apparently a gold belt that Ms. Cole was wearing…but the balls were too heavy for the belt to remain waist-side and so fell down to this precarious position.

Dead. Wid. Laff. Hee-larious! I really liked your top and your haircut is really cute Keyshia…but uhm, leave them balls at home pls.

Another interesting look of the night…enter Brick and Lace please.

I feel like I’m watching Project Runway and these are the models of the "make me a dress out of anything but fabric" challenge. But wait…it gets better!

Rock it out then chicas!

La Pluma Negra: A Foundation Brand

Jul 22nd, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Featured Articles, Jamaican Designers

When it comes to t-shirt brands in Jamaica…they’re a dime a dozen. EVERY one has a t-shirt line. I know this personally with my background of being a sales rep for t-shirt brands before and having stores tell me "please, no more" as they showed me shelf after shelf of t-shirt lines already stocked. In the over-saturated t-shirt market, La Pluma Negra has planted roots and is growing strong, having expanded into sweaters, button-ups and bottoms. They’ve been around since November of 2003 and they’re still relevant to date, they haven’t gotten too common or too cheesy yet they’re still hot and still rising.

La Pluma Negra, spanish for "the black feather" or "the black pen" is a line centered around exhibiting cultural awareness and pride, with phrases and designs documenting popular cultural terms such as "empress" and "100% Jamaican" or "made in Jamaica" They don’t venture too far out into popular terms or keep up with current slangs, they keep it simple…foundation. They pride themselves on being a high quality line, something that is sometimes challenging to bring across to their consumers:

La Pluma Negra takes T-shirts? identity of understated practicality and has given it a new distinctiveness that merges culture and sophistication with comfortable high quality clothing. The designs are avant-garde, sexy, tough, and classy and capture the great sense of humor of the Caribbean by using well-known phrases. Our most common challenge is getting our customers to understand that we offer high quality therefore one will have to patronize such efforts. As they say - you get what you pay for. In getting a higher quality it may mean spending a few extra dollars.

They have clothing for men, women and an adorable kiddies line called Tickles:

How cute is that? You can purchase from their website LaPlumaNegra.com or from their local store at 96 Hope Road, Kingston 6, Jamaica. They start their Trini line this fall, continuing on their vision of expanding the line as a truly Caribbean one. Wendy Lee Richards and Glenford Laughton, the innovators of this line, have alot to be proud of.

Shout outs to ma Trini fren Ria, can you guess which one is her? LOL, one guess… :P

Sprawl goes islandwide

Jul 16th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Featured Articles, Jamaican Designers

Riding high on the success of their "Kingstonians Do It Better" tee, popular Jamaican t-shirt brand Sprawl has included a number of designs appealing to the locals of other parishes. In keeping with their democratic tradition, fans of Sprawl tees voted on designs offered and sure enough Portmore fans came out on top, with Negril and St. Thomas in the mix. Mobay and Ocho Rios were close, but no cigar.

Other designs included in the summer line up are said to be a prelude to the party collection scheduled to be unveiled this Christmas.

The Red Wedding dress…do you dare?

Jul 14th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Irie Diva's Picks

I came across this blog featuring a red wedding dress and wondered how many of my readers would dare to try it out. I think we Caribbean people are a very traditional set of folk when it comes to these ceremonies…weddings, funerals, baby christenings and the like. I have to say that I absolutely love this dress but I’m not sure I’m brave enough to get married in it. I would definitely go the honey route though (pictured below) with maybe olive green bridesmaid dresses? And if you went the red dress route…what color dresses would you put your bridesmaids in?

Justin Alexander is the designer of this beautiful dress and you can find more from him here .

Irie Diva Style: The High Gladiators

Jul 7th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Irie Diva's Picks

I done it again y’all! I told my friends that I LOVE these Tall Gladiator sandals I saw on Amazon.com

And of course they looked at me like I was downright crazy!!! LOL!!! Ever since my last gladiator post where I turned up my nose and the Olsen twins for wearing their high gladiator sandals, I’ve since been reformed after seeing these Givenchy high gladiator booties

We have seen and fell in love with the shorter version on every one from Tracee Ellis Ross to Cassie…I have to be different and rock the high ones come on!!!

Now of course I can’t afford me no Givenchy…but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to try out this high-bootie trend. I thought I would go the quirky, laid-back-but-still-rocking-it-out-fab look for my version…kinda like fly girl Rihanna does here…cute right?

Those aren’t really gladiators…but you get the look I’m tryna achieve here. No? Time for some outfits!

So after awhile my friends looked at the outfits and were like…"hmmm…I can see where your going with this…it could work…"

Of course it can!!! That’s why I’m Irie Diva! My diva is on a waaaay different kinda vibe! What say you stylites? I am loving all three outfits. I love how I took the simple beige dress in the first one and sassed it up with the belt and sandals, and I love the wooden cuff. The pink outfit…don’t you love how I took such a girly pocket-dress and totally transformed it rocker-chic style with the leather cuffs and poison necklace? No? :( And the orange dress…I’m fitn to wear that to a party right now! Come on y’all…try summn new!

As always you can click the image to find the details on each individual item.

Are you starting to feel the high gladiators too?

Bwoy Beatazz - A Concept, not a threat?

Jul 4th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Featured Articles, Jamaican Designers

Photobucket
Bwoy Beatazz sounds either like wife beaters, or me actually beating down a boy…but the "bwoy" they’re referring to is actually that "bwoy…life hard eeh" sigh of misery we let out every now and then, as put by Leslie Hood, PRO for the brand:

" "It’s a concept, not a threat" refers to peoples apprehension upon hearing the words ‘bwoy beatazz,’ the Jamaican phonetic spelling of boy beaters. Typically they think it refers to literal women beating up men or a play on the term wife beater. However, the concept came about not as a way to bring down men, but as a means to encourage and uplift women. Bwoy Beatazz refers to women getting rid of their typical cry of frustration, ‘oh bwoy.’ It has nothing to do with physical violence, or mass female domination that is why we say "it’s a concept, not a threat."

So you see, this Jamaican brand is all about empowering the woman, as their two icons the lioness and the lotus flower suggests. Designer Dene Chung says her mission is to "create garments that are a physical embodiment of women’s inner lioness, a breastplate which serves as a constant reminder that we are more than our circumstances." Dene is "passionate about Bwoy Beatazz’s mission and currently uses it as an outreach tool to work with young women/lionesses who are seeking to find their pride, their place in the jungle of urban life. She seeks "not just to create a clothing line but to create a brand and ultimately a social group around positive influences for young women.
Well go Dene! The brand has been around for a couple of years and has outfitted several of our famous "lionesses" to date:

The line so far consists mostly of tops, hoodies and dresses. They’re planning launches in Japan and the US currently and have committed to donating 10% of all Jamaican profits to breast cancer related charities, so I implore all my lionesses to check them out and offer some support. They’re at myspace.com/bwoybeatazz , email bwoybeatazz@yahoo.com

What I wore to…work today

Jul 2nd, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Featured Articles, Street Style

So this is my little feature called "What I wore to…" where you can send me your pics of what you wore to work, to the party, to the club, to the field trip, to the museum, to the fashion show, on the date, on your birthday…you get the idea. If you took an extra 20 mins to get dressed today and you’re feeling extra snazzy…go ahead and send your pics to iriediva@fashionoverstyle.net and I’ll show stylistas everywhere what you wore! How snazzy are you?

I’ll start with Sade. She rocked a gorgeous linen, sailor-style, shirt-dress to work and was all decked out, full white style with chunky gold accessories. Sade gets full marks for working it out for us full-figure gals, nipping in the waist and flowing smoothly over the curves… the only thing I would have done differently was to wear full sandals…what about you?
