These are a few of my favourite things

Apr 27th, 2009 | By Willard Alexander | Category: Male Style - Willard A

I watched “The Sound of Music” as a young man, and as is the case with most other movies, I don’t remember a thing from it aside from a few songs of which one is the title of this article. Of course there is the Saigon version of said song, but that’s another story for another day. I feel really good about this one, and I hope you feel the same. These are a few wardrobe essentials, or some things I am just feeling a lot right now. Yeah, it’s that simple. Please bear in mind that I don’t own every single thing on this list, but I’m getting there.

These are a few of my favourite things:

  • Pen – Mont Blanc/Cross – Remember my whole thing of CONGRUENCE? Please do not be that executive rocking a 50¢ PAPERMATE pen with your $1,500 suit! I IMPLORE THEE!
  • Cross Pen Mont Blanc Pen

  • Cuff links – I wear these most days. Nothing too over the top for plain silver will do. The older you get, the less trendy they should be. Don’t embarrass yourselves, gentlemen.
  • Cuff links

  • Business card holder – really, what else do you carry your business cards in? How do you prevent them being dog-eared? Elevate your game, fellows.
  • Business Card Holder

  • Money clips – this is one of those things that distinguish the average man from the TRULY stylish gentleman, particularly in formal situations. Now, when wearing a suit, there should be NO bulges (from wallets, cell phones etc), hence, this is where the money clip is a priceless commodity and thus, one of my favourite things. (Extra points if you get it monogrammed.)
  • Money Clip

  • Blackberry – I’m sure most people have one of these anyway.
  • Blackberry

  • Pocket squares – Add flavour to any suit. Mentioned in Suit Yourself Revisited
  • Watch – Rolex Yachtmaster, Mont Blanc Sport GMT – very pricey, and definitely out of my budget (until my business takes off) but they are truly beautiful timepieces that I intend to own. Of course, it goes without saying that automatic movement is the minimal. If you don’t know, better ask somebody!
  • Rolex Yachtmaster Mont Blanc Sport GMT (Automatic) Mont Blanc Sport GMT

  • Wallet – leather, my current Timberland joint was pretty expensive but has lasted me for 8 years and looks as good as new. How many wallets have you bought in the last 8 years? Tough question right?
  • Briefcase – Mandatory.
  • Monograms on my dress shirts – my mother once relayed something someone told her to me. In short, it was basically that anyone with monograms on their shirt takes themselves very seriously. Imagine her surprise when she realized that I’ve been wearing my initials on my joints for the last two years! If you don’t know what a monogram is, go and find out. I can’t take credit for it, though. I saw the CEO of my former employers rocking a shirt with his initials “MCL” while in Costa Rica and was blown away. I had to follow suit (no pun intended), so, I did. My friends see them and ask if its my own clothing line, LOL.
  • Monogram

  • Rugby shirts, long-sleeved, white collar Tommy Hilfiger. Ever notice how the collar buttons are hidden? Very nice touch. Tommy is the man. I actually would buy the one pictured if it didn’t cost £85. Got to be kidding me. I’ll wait on a sale or something.
  • Tommy Hilfiger Rugby Shirt

  • Murse – Previously mentioned aquí
  • Air Force Ones – BLANCO (white), Supreme leather, LOW, end of story.
  • Prada Americas Cup – Previously mentioned.
  • Sports Jacket – give me in beige/tan, grey (charcoal, of course) or BROWN!
  • I am starting to get the hang of this thing again and I really like this article, do you? Let me know! willard_a@fashionoverstyle.net is the place to get me. Have a good week eh? Peace & Love.

    Sincerely yours,

    Willard A.

    1. lol @ you and your murse…

and you need to upgrade, the storm is where its at hehe

that rugby shirt looks EXACTLY like you, you don’t have sumn similar already?

    2. I was born in Jamaica, and always know that the work industry takes quite a lot of pride in the work dress code more so than most other countries; however London is the place of chic business dress code, as we live so close to the rest of Europe….. saying all that, i guess what i am trying to say is, i am feeling it all, keep writing, it’s getting even more interesting…..

    3. Diva, I wish I did have a TH Rugby shirt like that one… I don’t though :( . I have a light blue short-sleeved one, but nothing with the turquoise in it, YET. The storm isn’t it for me, not without Wi-Fi, plus, I haven’t had my 8320 for 12 calendar months yet, so a change ain’t gonna come here.

Thanks Talia, next time just include the “i am feeling it all, keep writing, it’s getting even more interesting…..” and I would have gotten the point, LOL. :D
