Check it out (no doubt) … I need your opinion
May 30th, 2009 | By Willard Alexander | Category: Male Style - Willard A
This article came to me like a song I wrote (“tell the trick get the scarf, pillow case and rope” – Notorious B.I.G, “Story to tell”) … anyway, so this is a new spin on things. I am going to ask your opinion on my outfit for my friend’s nuptials this coming weekend. Now, it is an afternoon, outdoor wedding (not in a church). Pictured are the shirt, jacket, tie and pocket square that I intend to wear. These are pretty much set in stone because of what I believe will be the wedding’s theme, and the fact that it will be occurring while the sun is still up. Upper body wear is set, however, I am just unsure about my pants and I have two options, navy or beige, clearly I can’t wear both at the same time eh? There are pros and cons to both, let’s go:
NAVY
Pros:
(i) the shirt and tie are more suited to the navy pants and would look a lot better with the navy than with the beige if I ever have to remove the jacket, to dance up a storm, for instance. (Not likely, since I’m not much of a dancer, but I will shake a leg if the mood strikes)
(ii) navy will reduce the overkill since I’ll be wearing brown shoes
(iii) navy will look more appropriate as evening progresses to night
(iv) wearing the navy pants with the beige jacket would suggest I’m lightening up for an afternoon wedding rather than attempting (poorly at that) to put a suit together with the beige pants that do not match the jacket
Cons:
(i) there is a slight chance that the navy pants and the jacket would clash
(ii) the pants could prove to be a bit hotter (literally) than their brown counterparts in the afternoon sun
BEIGE
Pros:
(i) may go better with the jacket and tie
(ii) may prove to be “cooler” and more casual than navy
(iii) will go very well with brown shoes and belt
Cons:
(i) an attempt to match, it could be overkill
(ii) the faded blue pinstripes in the jacket could prove to be too much for the pants to keep up with
(iii) the rule of thumb says "Don’t wear brown on the town", which essentially means, do not wear brown after the sun is down.
Blah, some of the pros and cons were becoming repetitive so I will quit while I am “ahead”. Truth is, I think I have made my decision, however I will wait until I have tried both on and attended the event to make the choice public. Heck, I may even post a picture! Now if only I had elastics in the colour blue (that is NOT a give-away!), cha! More next time, holler at me eh? willard_a@fashionoverstyle.net . Peace & Love.
Sincerely yours,
Willard A.

Will, does that jacket have blue and beige pin stripes? SICK! anyhoo i think i’m feeling the brown
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I like all the pieces, good selection man! However i think you need a darker brown belt with either pants.
I prefer the navy blue pants though and i say lose the tie, it’s an outdoor wedding, the sun will be kicking in the afternoon, give your neck a breather.
Outfit sell off
Diva, yes it does, thanks so much.
Kerri, I favour the navy pants also. Heck, I’m wearing the navy joints for the very same reason mentioned earlier, the outfit looks better with them.
Blah, maybe I should have lost the tie but after much ado I opted to drop the jacket. What a thing eeh man?
Re: the compliments, you all are far too kind! About to get the proceedings proceeding. Will drink a whites for you. Peace.

hmmm… well I guess I don’t need to give my opinion since u already chose what I would recommend
(be sure to post pics post-event)
p.s. get rid of the wire hangers dude! One lil slip n u could ruin a great garment *shakes head*
hmmmm… y it seem lyk I’m a whole day late?! ah well, lol
Maybe because you are one day late?!
I feel you re: the wire hangers. Truth is, I had intended to invest in the proper IKEA wooden versions from a while back but because I haven’t been to the USA since that time, I’ve been continually putting it off!
I will do it in September, trust. In one of my Black Books it was said that wire hangers are only good for breaking into cars!
I must agree (lol).
Thanks for tuning in. I have seen one pic with me thus far but I’m sure I’ll get more and will share soon. Remember though, I didn’t wear the jacket since it was outdoors and extremely hot.

To me, both pants work. The jacket is the variable that can throw off the whole look. The jacket stubbornly demands matching pants. Not feeling the blue thing in the pocket either. The colour shock works for women better than men.
My suggestions are to either get a matching pants or lose the jacket and go with something like a vest or go for the throwback classic look – suspenders!
You make an interesting set of points there AG. Firstly, I agree with you re: the jacket, it could be tricky. I also agree with you re: the waistcoat. Very very nice suggestion which I will take onboard for my next outdoor wedding.
Regarding the pocket square, I beg to differ, for as I have written (almost to the point of ad mauseum) before, they set the fashionable fellow apart from the average man. The suspenders is also a decent suggestion but when worn at the same time as a belt one looks rather ignorant since they are to be used interchangeably eh?
Matching pants for the jacket would look tacky in my opinion. It appears to me that sports jackets/blazers are not to match one’s pants therefore I wouldn’t want to defy the rule and have the jacket be “blah”. It is supposed to stand out just a bit.
I’m not omitting my belt, lol. Thanks for writing in, your viewpoints are fresh!

Isn’t the jacket a part of the suit? I don’t really like mixing and matching jackets and pants, I prefer a suit anytime. As far as your combination, I prefer the beige.
