What I wore to…work today

Jul 2nd, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Street Style

So this is my little feature called "What I wore to…" where you can send me your pics of what you wore to work, to the party, to the club, to the field trip, to the museum, to the fashion show, on the date, on your birthday…you get the idea. If you took an extra 20 mins to get dressed today and you’re feeling extra snazzy…go ahead and send your pics to iriediva@fashionoverstyle.net and I’ll show stylistas everywhere what you wore! How snazzy are you?

I’ll start with Sade. She rocked a gorgeous linen, sailor-style, shirt-dress to work and was all decked out, full white style with chunky gold accessories. Sade gets full marks for working it out for us full-figure gals, nipping in the waist and flowing smoothly over the curves… the only thing I would have done differently was to wear full sandals…what about you?

Street Style - SWJ Style

May 26th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Street Style

Barbie from Alexxya (the store Tifa and I did our shopping feature ) was spotted at Style Week’s Friday event rocking a hot pair of white wide-legged pants, so on point. You know white pants are all the rage, a trend that really evolves only in style from skinny to wide-legged to boot cut to straight and will always be a closet staple. [click for larger images]

Street Style - Cute as a button

Apr 6th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Street Style

It’s been a minute hasn’t it? Yeah I know it’s been crazy around these parts but not to worry, I have crazy updates for you all this week. For now, check out Kai,  local hottie as cute as a button in her halter shirt-dress and oxford booties, which I absolutely love! They remind me of these Gucci ones that I’m still so in love with. Kai’s sense of style is always on point and trendy. Here she mixes and mingles around with  friends at a company event. My only critique…I wished the colours were more complementing, the brown dress with the mud red shoe and bag combo sounds good on paper but somehow here it doesn’t pop for me…but girl I love the dress and I LOVE the shoes! Keep doing your thing.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday…Bembe!!!

Jan 11th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Fashionable Events, Street Style

One of the top search queries that take people to this site is still "Bembe" i.e. people looking for pictures from the popular weekly "downtown comes uptown" party that happens at Weekends on Constant Spring Road Kgn, Jamaica. I made a promise long ago to bring some pictures from the party as the fashion there truly epitomises dancehall fashion. However, I’ve still not been back! :( Not to worry though, there are tons of pics online especially of the one year anniversary celebration that happened late last year. So just in case you have googled Bembe and have not come across these galleries, I’ve linked a few pics of theirs to show you, spreading some love for fellow Jamaican sites. Make sure to visit the site for the full galleries and info on other Jamaican entertainment. Enjoy the fashions below, they are quite….uhmm….illustrious! I look forward to your comments. Oh the dancehall culture…gotta love it!!! Meantime I can see that I need to do a make-up update!!!

Additional info

The trend for swimsuits this year includes geometric designs and african print that Jamaican women adore wearing. The latest style at fashionable events in women’s swimwear is tankinis. A tankini is a two piece swimsuit that covers the belly. This could be a great gift idea for your girl or if you need an idea for a man; get a swatch . Buy a luxurious swiss breitling watch and make your man the happiest man alive! Staying with the swiss theme, how about luger swiss binoculars for your boyfriend?

Jamaican Dancehall fashions from the 70s to now + Advertising on FOS is good for you!

Nov 22nd, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Fashionable Events, Street Style

Recently on FOS I featured an up and coming designer who makes swimwear, intimate apparel and costumes. She called me with the exciting news that thanks to FOS her line (Dashielle’s Dezines) was requested at a fashion event being held at the University of Technology. I was happy to have helped her boost her brand exposure and went along to capture her first event.

The event was organized by students of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and was intended to feature our dancehall fashions from the 1970s up until now. It was a lovely gathering of fashion and entertainment and while not well attended, maybe because of the rains, it was fun nevertheless.

Marlon C was the host for the evening (pictured above) and did a wonderful job of keeping the crowd entertained, along with the likes of Macka Diamond, Mr Lex and John Hype and the crew.

Snapped up a pic of Miss Dashielle at her booth

The 70s booth featured dutch pots over coal stoves, huge boom box radios and of course afros and bell bottoms.

80s fashion was very much looking like she wore that outfit just last month to the club, my how quickly the styles come back around eh!

The Bashment 90s were quite the colorful set (more pics after the cut)

A little more halloween fun

Oct 31st, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Street Style

I did a post recently on some “scary stuff” so I thought I’d try and source some pics for you guys to see if our Jamaican people really went all out in costumes at the various halloween parties. As expected, only a handful of patrons turned out in costumes, but at least they didn’t do it half-assed….they went all out! I saw one girl in a towel and a shower cap, girl you are brave! and I saw the cutest couple, little red riding hood and the big bad scary wolf! They definitely get my prize for most creative! Or at least the cutest couple :D  Shout outs to the chef, broomy, the suicide bomber and ms fantasia!

Rock ya boots girl!

Oct 18th, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Street Style

Remember how I had said Jamaican people don’t normally wear boots on the regular and some people think its just wrong to do so? Well…not my girl Sandra! Outta street today (well more like two cubicles down) my girl looked out her window, saw that it was raining and decided to rock her boots to work! And she looks fabulous doing so if I do say so myself. Her toesies kept nice and dry trudging through the drizzle and she looked cute while at it. She pairs it with matching jacket and a colourful cami brightening the day. I just had to snap her and say girl…you are different and you are cute! Am I alone on this?

Are you feeling Sandra’s boots?

D is total hotness, I’m a little biased because I know homegirl, but come on, no competition here. Closest is C but I am deeply opposed to the hair, the accessories and that metal spider thing in the middle of her dress that is so common on tops and dresses these days.

B….Lets just move on

A :-| When will we begin to put in weave that looks more believable…when? *sigh* The shorts are another matter but I’m really opposed to her hair.

Am I wrong here ppl?

I’ll leave you with last week’s winner. Now maybe I’m jus hating on homegirl’s ability to rock such a skimpy dress with such ease (yes I’m totally hating) but these jewels here look like they were taken from a cracker-jack box. I’ll qoute one guy “i almost like it, minus those jewels on her neck, who told her hoochi and queen elizabeth go together?” HA love it!

The matching hair and “bride of chucky” make up is not working for me either but I’m not gonna hate on homegirl’s bod, she is wearing the heck out of this dress! Loves it! (and it’s so trendy in the hot jewel tone colour that is all the craze right now) You go ma…

Bembe Thursdays

Jul 28th, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Fashionable Events, Street Style

So I went to Bembe Thursday (a weekly dance party in midtown Kingston JA) a couple of weeks ago, just to see what all the hype was about and take some pictures of the amazing trends of Dancehall Jamaica. Well, next time lets just say I will be more prepared. It was a little rough around the edges to say the least. The fashion was hot! But i was scared to take some of these people’s pictures, they looked like they would snatch me and my camera apart in two winks!

It was too crowded for me to move around comfortably, but the music was good. I promise, I’ll go back soon and capture some real dancehall style.

So here is a sneak peak of what’s to come, bright colours with hair to match and mohawks galore…Monday Tuesday Wednesday BEMBE!
