Its Cocktail Time - Banana Daiquiri

Nov 1st, 2007 | By Irie Diva | Category: Its Cocktail Time

I’m noticing a trend here…I seem to like milky products…never mind that I’m intolerant! Next cocktail time I’ll be sure to take a break from these wonderful creamy delights…but for now the spotlight is on the banana daiquiri. I noticed some girls are not too experimental with their drink choices. They sip Smirnoff Ices all night long and if they’re feeling to step it up a notch they order strawberry daiquiris. Come on ladies change it up a bit. This is a smooth, creamy, refreshing change from that of the main strawberry daiquiri. My bartender Ryan from Indies as usual hooked me up with his bad-ass banana daiquiri last night, and it was just the pick me upper I needed while waiting on all this rain and traffic to ease up. Its the kind of drink that’s gentle and mild and very calming to the soul. Would be perfect for a dinner date I imagine. Try one, next time you’re out, or throw these ingredients together from your wet bar.

Banana Daiquiri

  • 1 1/2 oz Light rum
  • 1 tblsp Triple sec
  • 1 Banana
  • 1 1/2 oz Lime juice
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 1 Cherry

Combine all ingredients (except for the cherry) with 1 cup crushed ice in an electric blender. Blend at a low speed for five seconds, then blend at a high speed until firm. Pour contents into a champagne flute, top with the cherry, and serve

Its Cocktail Time - Juliana Blue

Juliana Blue

On this slow and lazy Sunday afternoon, I’m home doing laundry that I was unable to do because of the rains spoken about last week. I do so while catching up on the latest Brit news and all the other useless celeb gossip I may have missed and channel surf to find something worthwhile to watch which seems impossible on a Sunday. I do all my rounds of my favourite fashion blogs and realize I may be the only person who updates on a Sunday. My phone is ringing, all my friends want to go to the beach or what have you, but the beaches close by will be too packed and the ones further out are…well…too far out. I have work early in the morning, and it’s a holiday so I dare not miss the extra holiday pay!

So today I bring you another fab cocktail for your weekend pleasures. This one seems to have flown below the radar as not even my favourite bartender site has it in their listing. I can tell my bartender friend at Indies was trained well, he definitely has his cocktail game on lock! Anyhow, it’s called a Juliana Blue and it is absolutely gorgeous! It’s that nice baby blue colour that just sings tropical happiness, topped with pine and cherries to hit the theme home. It has a good amount of pine juice (which I hate) in it so that was the main flavour, but it was creamy as well to take away the zing of the pine. As pine is not my favourite fruit drink at all you know how good this drink was for me to be singing its praises! After a couple of these babies I was good and nice! ;)

Here are the ingredients. Do what I do, save them in your blackberry and share it with your favourite bartender if he’s not familiar because this is definitely one to add to the regulars. If he’s like my friend, then he’ll appreciate the repertoire update and may throw in a freebie ;)

Crushed ice
1 measure gin
½ measure Cointreau
½ measure blue Curaçao
2 measures pineapple juice
½ measure fresh lime juice
1 measure coconut cream
1-2 ice cubes

To decorate:-
Pineapple slice
Cocktail cherries

This is my drink Friday nite, mmmm yummy!

It’s Cocktail time! Almond Hazel

One of my absolutely favorite things to do is visit a fabulous bar where I can sit and lyme with friends and try new cocktails. With my new fabulous feature, I’ll invite you to step out of your “rum n coke” or “vodka/cran” box and try one of the favorites that I’ve encountered on my rounds. Of course, I am but one person and can only consume so much alcohol…as hard as I sometimes try…so I invite you to share your favorites with me so that I too can expand my palette to the wide array of mixes that await.

But first, as always, a definition. Wiki says a cocktail is: a style of mixed drink. A cocktail usually contains one or more types of liquor and flavorings, usually one or more of a liqueur, fruit, sauce, honey, milk or cream, spices, etc.

I was introduced to this cocktail by my good friend and drinking partner in crime Tami, at one of our visits to Indies Bar & Grill on Holborn Road, New Kingston. Bartender Ryan calls it an Almond Hazel, though I’ve been to other bars where it appeared on the menu as something else. When I went back, I made sure to get the ingredients down so that I can order it wherever I go as the bartender at my favorite hot spot was quite confused when I ordered it there:

  • Amaretto
  • Tia Maria
  • Creme

That’s it! Ryan used evaporated milk with mine and it was simply amazing! Every time I go there I start with that. Its not as creamy as a rum cream and not as harsh as a mixed drink. Try it, you’ll be glad you did!

Make sure to report back here if you like it! And share your favorites with me please! By the way if you are a bartender or love trying new mixes, then webtender is your friend!
