What I wore to…work today

Jul 2nd, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Street Style

So this is my little feature called "What I wore to…" where you can send me your pics of what you wore to work, to the party, to the club, to the field trip, to the museum, to the fashion show, on the date, on your birthday…you get the idea. If you took an extra 20 mins to get dressed today and you’re feeling extra snazzy…go ahead and send your pics to iriediva@fashionoverstyle.net and I’ll show stylistas everywhere what you wore! How snazzy are you?

I’ll start with Sade. She rocked a gorgeous linen, sailor-style, shirt-dress to work and was all decked out, full white style with chunky gold accessories. Sade gets full marks for working it out for us full-figure gals, nipping in the waist and flowing smoothly over the curves… the only thing I would have done differently was to wear full sandals…what about you?

The Trendiness: Pocket Dresses

By now you know how much I love dresses and therefore on the lookout for all the beautiful varieties I can wear them in. I have been ooohhhhing and aaahhhing over pocket dresses for the longest while now…dont you just love them? From funkified-formal ones popping up on red carpets to cool and breezy jersey casuals…I think I’m in love. Above you’re seeing Rosario Dawson, Lauren London and Audrina from The Hills.

This mustard one is a hottie…perfect for those of us covering up muffin tops and pouches…

How cute are they all?

So…CFW or SWJ? What say you?

Jun 25th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Featured Articles

Now that Style week and Fashion week is over…which was better? Why? What expectations did you have and were they met? Let’s speak on it.

I for one enjoyed CFW waaaay better. But then, my expectations were as such. I’ve always felt that the two were on different levels, SWJ tries to please the crowd by bringing us “hype” and “flava” while CFW brings world class presentations to us so that we get the feel of a fashionweek that would happen in a Paris or Milan. Style week. Both of the had horrible delays. On CFW’s opening night, the showed started 3 HOURS late as we waited patiently while the stage was being built!!! Are they serious??? Style week had us wait almost an hour in between shows for an editor who had just flown in from London or something…because my presence alone is clearly not enough.

The CFW location was much better, it was indoors for one and I could actually see what was on the runway. Fashionblock is very overhyped, the sidewalk can only hold so much people (which was way too stuffed for my liking) and outside of that you can’t see jack! The sponsors on board made for a better CFW experience…Taboo, Smirnoff Flavoured Vodka and Nestle Supligen mixes were free flowing…though the combining of all three is not something I’d recommend! The idea of setting up booths so that the audience can actually meet the designers and purchase items on spot, also one-ups SWJ.

SWJ had great entertainment at Fashionblock, the fire-spitting dancers were HOT, pun intended LOL. The gas they left on the stage also made for very funny trips from the models as well…ok that wasn’t really funny but hey no one got seriously hurt.

I really enjoyed the collections from both shows though, this years collections were really good. Colour was definitely a trend…bright, vibrant colourful pieces…I was disappointed by only a minimal few.

Enough of me babbling on…what do our loyal FOS readers have to say?

Jhay:

Ofcourse the whole production of CFW is superior to SWJ. CFW had a more internatinal flair. Pulse is a lot more organized and it showed. Pulse’s venue choice was WAY better 2.
CFW lacked a certain something though that SWJ has - i think its the “hype” that SWJ brings which makes their shows not so boring as CFW.
Both events had shows that started late and unnecessay delays.
WRT [with regards to] designers, both brought designers that i really liked (i.e. Fauvette, Kevin O’brian, Ande Sew & Reve from SWJ and Claudia Pegus, Catalin Botezatu, The Cloth & Bill Edwards from CFW) and others i didn’t.
I missed Posh Punk (ye that piece that Jaunel is wearing on the cover of the CFW book) that showed the previous 2 years at CFW though.
Ryo in response to Jhay
True to everything said above.
In my view however hype is relative. SWJ tends to bring a certain crowd while CFW brings another. I don’t think much has to be said on that. LOL. Personally I was more excited to see CFW than I was SWJ just because of what I know I could expect; and the quality of the show.
Sasha:
I’ve never been to Style Week,so this won’t be a fair comparison…BUT!…Last year’s CFW was excellent.I can’t say the same for this year.

The timing delays were TERRIBLE and only about two designers’ work really impressed me.The rest looked like stuff any old someone could put together. Was rather disappointed. It was not classy at all at all. Hopefully next year it will be better.

Sheena:
Cfw is by far my Fav, there was a lot of class to this show, I was wowed by almost all of the designers..Great emphasis was placed on the cleanliness of runway which added to the designers showcase.
As for style week, I’m yet to find a designer that wowed me in all that craziness. It was as if I was at a Circus
Ryo:
Imo Pulse was the better show, always has been. Pulse knows how to put on a world class event..and that they did. Both shows however suffered from late starts and that was off-putting.
In regards to venue, Pulse again scores high points. The NISC is as good a venue as any and it sure beats the muddy, outdoor locales that Saint seems to favour for the past few years. Also Saint needs to do away with the fabric runway…it’s not a good look. In fact it’s very high school talent show!!

It seems we’re all in favour of Pulse. Come on Deweight, step up your game. Every interview Mr. Deweight Peters of Saint does, there is no mistaking the superiority he oozes ensuring us all that Style Week is THE fashion week of the region and can be compared to none other…it seems your patrons don’t agree.
What say you?

We’re you there? The Pulse CFW opening night was fire!

Jun 14th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Caribbean Fashion Week, Fashionable Events

Maaaaaan, if you weren’t there you should feel real bad! Not to worry, you have another chance tonight, and one more tomorrow! I know you’re dying to see all the collections, trust me they was FIRE. 3rd Revolt took the night for me…those dresses were fire! I’ma need a word with the stylists too…cus the shoes are HOT!!! I know, I know, I’m raving and you can’t see nothing. I’m still sifting through all the photos but I had to make a quick one stop and post some crowd shots. The fashion at the event was in alot of cases hotter than what was on the runway! I saw fabulosity (that was for you Ryan ) everywhere I looked and yes of course I saw lots of HAMs too (hot azz messes)

In front row I peeped Danella from BET’s Black Carpet…that is her right?

Danella

Yeah that’s her…

Designer Lubica was also front row checking things out (she shows on Sunday)

And top honcho Kingsley Cooper (CEO of Pulse) sat with Rodney Davis and wife.

And from the audience…

You know how I love dresses right

Looking good ladies! I was gonna crop out Ms Thing sitting in the background but truth be told when I saw the shot I kinda liked her dress colours! Her shoes look hot too…

Miss Gail my adopted Shimmer model…

and a little preview from the runway…Luna Designs from Barbados always brings across these lovely treasures made from seeds! I have one of the earrings and its still my fave…I get compliments every time I wear them.

Gorgeous right?

How hot is the cobalt blue???? That neck piece in the top right corner would make a statement!

This was from their booth at the event (yes you can come and buy it if you want!!!) See a few more pics here . Runway pics are coming…see you tonite!

It’s Fashion Week BABY!!!!!

Jun 13th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Caribbean Fashion Week, Fashionable Events

That’s so TOTALLY my theme all of this weekend. Style week came and went and brought the fabulosity…however, I dunno, I just feel a slightly higher buzz when its fashionweek time. I mean they both have their setbacks mind you, horrible delays between shows and what-not, but CFW is just always more grandiose and more fabulous!

Style week brought Ed Hardy. Caribbean Fashion Week ups the ante, promising to bring us Apple Bottoms by Nelly, Fetish by EVE (and yes they say she’ll be here) Catalin Botezatu from Romania (who brought all sorts of FABULOUSNESS last year and Deola Sagoe from Nigeria. All of that with local and regional favorites Biggy, Bill Edwards, Lubica, Poshe and Keneea (FOS royalties) Mushroom, Mynka, Moncriefe, Mutamba, Meiling, Bridget Sandals and Luna Accessories and expected stars like Vanessa Williams, Eve, Nia Long and Mashonda (should I ask her about Alicia Keys taking her man ?) populating the front row….jah know the fabulosity is overwhelming! Not to mention Pulse’s star top models and performances each night from either Cezar, Tami Chin and other local faves? Put a fork in me, I’m DONE!

Its time ladies and gents, tonight the catwalk comes alive! I’m there front and centre in full paparazzi…er….I meant journalistic mode…LOL stay tuned for all the fabulous updates.

Indashio in Jamaica…twice

Jun 9th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: All Jamaican, Fashionable Events, Featured Articles

So, remember how I told you [first] that Indashio was coming to show his line in Jamaica? Well that he did…twice. Indashio is quite a spirited character, i.e. a spunky lil dude, energetic and full o’ vibe. You can see he’d be great to party with and in fact, the after party was off the chain! Shout outs to Darren and the Sky Dock lounge.

However, I have a gripe with Mr. Indashio. I’m not sure who convinced you to show the ENTIRE line at Fashionblock, a free style week event, only to charge JA$2500 (about US$35) +drinks for me to watch the line all over again with no additives. How about next time at a pre -event you do a lil pre view…a lil teaser to plug your show? Cus if I’ve seen it all before, why’d I pay good money to go see it again? Thanks to your sponsor Uni-lever for the complimentary Ponds and Dove products though, those face-wipes are great for night time make-up removal!

Anyhoo…on to the line. It certainly reflects your personality: funky, spirited, colourful…FUN!

This was my favorite piece. The Zebra print over the turqoise was gorgeous…a refreshing change from the normal animal print matched with red…oh…you had a few of those two huh…

MMMMMhhhmmmm

Flip flops huh….only you Indashio… and maybe Dexter…

Work it out then… full gallery available here .

Street Style - SWJ Style

May 26th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Street Style

Barbie from Alexxya (the store Tifa and I did our shopping feature ) was spotted at Style Week’s Friday event rocking a hot pair of white wide-legged pants, so on point. You know white pants are all the rage, a trend that really evolves only in style from skinny to wide-legged to boot cut to straight and will always be a closet staple. [click for larger images]

StyleWeek Jamaica shows off the men’s collections

May 25th, 2008 | By Irie Diva | Category: Fashionable Events, Featured Articles, Jamaican Designers, Jamaican Models, Male Style

Styleweek Jamaica is well under way and will culminate tonight with it’s history making catwalk in the middle of Kingston’s busy busy business district (well on a Sunday night there’s not much business eh) and I can’t wait to be front and centre. The shows have been great thus far, with the normal setbacks such as HUMONGOUS delays between collections (man, we need to get over this ish!) but its all fab none-the-less.

Here’s your favorite fashionista snapping a shot with hottie model Tafari Hinds of GQ and French Connection fame. He’s such a gracious soul.

Irie Diva and Tafari Tafari Hinds

I also spotted Saint Top model Canise mingling in the crowd in a FABULOUS pair of black mary-janes with a red heel. She rocked it well in all black including the full length black leggings you all know I adore. Hot eh?

Of course I’m not about to leave you all out of the scene. I got a few clips of the final walks especially the fabulous Les Campbell, noted Jamaican menswear designer, Rojoe from Barbados and the dynamic Dexter Pottinger closing the show with the 3D 08 line. Check the vid for the fabulosity below.
